Venice … Magnificent at Night

“In the glare of the day, there is little poetry about Venice, but under the charitable moon, her stained palaces are white again.” – Mark Twain

We had a full day in Verona… so some decided to just stay in their hotels to rest. But the day wasn’t over yet for those who opted for Dinner in Venice. We went on a vaporetto (water bus) ride from our hotel.

… and was surprised when the vaporetto turned and the full view of Venice during the golden hour was in sight.

Exploring the streets of Venice was a delight at night …. when the tourists have left and all the city has quieted down.

Had dinner with our tour group at the Ristorante Antico Pignolo. It is a fine dining restaurant which was an optional choice for our tour. The “Antico Pignolo” Restaurant opened in 1930 and was even more immortalised in the Katharine Hepburn’s film “Summertime”, which was shot in its dining rooms. Well that was what the tour guide said but I haven’t really watched the film so it didn’t make much of a difference for me. 😂

While walking on the cobbled promenade which flanks the water’s edge (called Zattere) we saw some wares being sold… some of them were really amazing art pieces.

At the centre of it all is the St Mark’s Basilica and the Piazza San Marco. Enjoyed the night listening to music playing in the cafes while viewing the opulent design and architecture of the St Mark’s Basilica.

Thanks for your nice words Dora! The golden hour definitely adds drama to the beauty of Venice.

You’re right. There’s definitely a quality of drama in that shot, as if something is waiting to happen or already has. Mysterious. 🙂

You’re right, the best time to see Venice is in the evening when the cruise passengers are back on their ships. I haven’t been for years but you make me want to go back!
