Versailles

The Palace of Versailles is perhaps the most opulent and beautiful palace in Europe. This was once home to kings and queens of France. It is one of the most important places in France and is now recognised as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

This is the golden entry gate to The Palace of Versailles as my entry to Photographing Public Art Challenge.

Peace Sculpture at the entrance of the Palace

The Palace of Versailles began as a small lodge for Louis XIII and later became the official royal residence under Louis XIV. Nowadays it is a museum with more than 60,000 works of art capturing a part of the history of France.

Entrance and staircases.

Paintings on the ceiling of the Royal Chapel

The ceilings of the palace was so intricately decorated and in such an elaborate way.

Busts and golden sculptures inside some of the rooms in the palace.

This is the Hall of Mirrors which has rows of large gold and crystal statues on both sides of the room. It just celebrates France’s artistic, political and economic successes.

View from the windows of some of the rooms of the palace.

View of the courtyard.

The gardens of the palace are quite impressive, and there are plenty of sculptures and fountains to discover as well.

Some sitting sculptures in the facade of the palace as entry for Pull Up a Seat Challenge.

Beautiful pictures 🙂 I visited Versailles some years ago (only the palace, not the gardens because of bad weather). It left left a deep impression.

You’ve captured the splendour so well! I haven’t been to Versailles since I was 15, there’s always so much to do in Paris itself, but maybe we should go back some time …

No one does opulence like the French. I am always awed by the details.

I wonder if it’s always been that way. Vince and I were in Paris years ago for his son’s wedding. It seems we went there, and the inside was fairly devoid of art. All the beautiful pieces were in the Louvre. They were probably refurbishing. It looks very amazing now. 🙂
