We visited this place a few years ago, but as we passed the wire gates of Veg Out Community Gardens this time, we noticed countless new things to discover. Curiosity got the best of us, so we decided to step inside and explore once again.
Veg Out Community Garden is an organic, chemical-free oasis in the heart of St Kilda, just off Acland Street. With limited space for gardens in the area, I imagine this place exists to give the community a shared space to grow and connect with nature.

There were over 140 garden plots, where members, friends, families and community groups enjoy getting their hands into the soil. These gorgeous flowers are now in full bloom.

Unlike most community gardens in Melbourne, Veg Out doesn’t have barriers between common land and each plot just have paths that curve and meander with flowers and vegetables.

Some plots have creative artworks and metal sculptures

It is located in one of Melbourne’s busiest tourist spot but the rabbits and chickens, add yet another dimension.

In one of the corners of the garden sat a tiny collection of trinkets, hidden in plain sight. We would have missed it if not for Jack’s sharp eyes.

Scattered everywhere were these colourful benches.

In the far end stands what appears to be a workshop and storage room. It was fascinating to look around—children’s artwork, gardening tools, and a wooden model of a Melbourne tram, all set aside, perhaps for future use.

This place is bursting with creativity. Everywhere we looked, there were vibrant murals and old but charming doors, each adding to the artistic atmosphere.

As we were leaving, we spotted a gorgeous metal door, intricately detailed and full of character.

I am linking this to several challenges as usual:

I like the old gates as well as the garden concept
It gives a different but cool vibe having those old doors.
What a lovely vibrant space, Teresa. You would feel so at home there just pottering around. We have a couple of community gardens in Tavira and I did wonder about buying a plot but I’m not very good at growing stuff. We have our own little garden I could experiment with, but I rarely do. This looks so welcoming. Thanks for sharing!
They really built a community here. When one goes on holidays, the neighbour is willing to help out… as in the case of the person I talked with.
Haha I am the same, it is Jack who takes care of our garden.
So much wonderful colour and an overwhelming selection of great photographs. I particularly like the ‘tram’ model and all of those gates.
Thanks Scooj. Interesting to see even the junk.
What a great initiative! It looks well loved, as all those quirky touches show.
While I was there I saw and was able to talk to some of the owners. They were really hands on with taking care of their plot. And they tuned out to be all good friends. So that was nice to see.
So good to have a good news story these days!
Oh yes, love their stories!
Nice iron door on that community garden.
So much detail right. Thanks Frank.
Wow, Teresa. I love every bit of this post. The doors, the gates, the murals, that almost-ready-to-pick tomato (our garden is still snow covered), the tiny objects and all the colorful walls and benches. I’m glad you went in and I’m really glad you shared this with us.
So happy that you liked it Dan. Sometimes I just get lucky on my choices on where to explore.
Charming!😍
Thanks for your thoughts and for commenting, Tiffany.
What a charming garden with so much to see and enjoy. I like all the murals, benches, gates and plants. Thank you for your public art share.
My pleasure to share my walk. So many things to appreciate. Thanks Natalie.
What a fun place. I loved the colors of the benches and all of the creative touches.
Yes, this place is not only for The main purpose of raising fruits, vegetables and flowers but also for art. Glad you liked it.
What a cool spot! I especially like the benches. 🙂
Thanks Brenda. The benches are wonderful.
