We visited this place a few years ago, but as we passed the wire gates of Veg Out Community Gardens this time, we noticed countless new things to discover. Curiosity got the best of us, so we decided to step inside and explore once again.
Veg Out Community Garden is an organic, chemical-free oasis in the heart of St Kilda, just off Acland Street. With limited space for gardens in the area, I imagine this place exists to give the community a shared space to grow and connect with nature.
There were over 140 garden plots, where members, friends, families and community groups enjoy getting their hands into the soil. These gorgeous flowers are now in full bloom.
Unlike most community gardens in Melbourne, Veg Out doesn’t have barriers between common land and each plot just have paths that curve and meander with flowers and vegetables.
Some plots have creative artworks and metal sculptures
It is located in one of Melbourne’s busiest tourist spot but the rabbits and chickens, add yet another dimension.
In one of the corners of the garden sat a tiny collection of trinkets, hidden in plain sight. We would have missed it if not for Jack’s sharp eyes.
Scattered everywhere were these colourful benches.
In the far end stands what appears to be a workshop and storage room. It was fascinating to look around—children’s artwork, gardening tools, and a wooden model of a Melbourne tram, all set aside, perhaps for future use.
This place is bursting with creativity. Everywhere we looked, there were vibrant murals and old but charming doors, each adding to the artistic atmosphere.
As we were leaving, we spotted a gorgeous metal door, intricately detailed and full of character.

What a lovely vibrant space, Teresa. You would feel so at home there just pottering around. We have a couple of community gardens in Tavira and I did wonder about buying a plot but I’m not very good at growing stuff. We have our own little garden I could experiment with, but I rarely do. This looks so welcoming. Thanks for sharing!
They really built a community here. When one goes on holidays, the neighbour is willing to help out… as in the case of the person I talked with.

What a great initiative! It looks well loved, as all those quirky touches show.
While I was there I saw and was able to talk to some of the owners. They were really hands on with taking care of their plot. And they tuned out to be all good friends. So that was nice to see.
