La Cité in Carcassonne, located in southern France, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the whole country. Millions of visitors come every year to this huge fortified city on a hilltop.
From afar, this medieval fort looks like something out of a children’s story book. This castle was decided to be preserved in 1849 and it became a part of the UNESCO world heritage list of sites in 1997. As you can see below, it was equally breathtaking in the day or in the late afternoon sunset.
I am also sharing it as part of Jo’s Monday Walk Challenge
Our hotel was in this city centre just right opposite this bridge that crosses this waterway. Such an awesome view but guess what, we were not lucky enough to have a room with a view. .
And on the left hand side is this old bridge … don’t you think this is pretty as a picture?
Right on the corner of the old bridge that led to the medieval town, was this quaint little church known as Chapelle Notre Dame de la Santé.
It was quiet and serene as we walked in the chapel … with lovely stained-glass windows and plaques on the walls which simply said ‘merci’. (Thank you)
Carcassonne is a functioning city… we meandered down the narrow city streets, past the souvenir shops and olden style themed shops, stylish clothes stores, cafes and restaurants standing side by side with with stand side by side with shops having medieval items for sale.
Now we got to the Castle…
This is the Bust of Dame de Carcas, this smiling face was the first thing that we saw upon entering the gates of the castle.
As we walked the narrow streets of La Cite de Carcassonne… it seemed like we were transported to another world … to another time!
This was one experience that brought out the child in us and no wonder Carcassonne is one of the popular attraction to see, when in France.
From the ramparts, we admired the scenic views of the city as the sun was setting.
The view of the bridge during the golden hour as we finish our day one in Carcassonne.

When I look at the photos, I can well imagine that you have made a journey in time. What I always ask myself in places like this is, “Who would have ever been here before me and walked on these cobblestones?”
These kinds of places makes you think and makes your mind wander. Thanks for coming along on my journey!
A city I’ve always wanted to visit, Teresa. We’ve seen so little of France. And wouldn’t you know it, street art got there first! Thanks so much for sharing! Happy August!
Maybe one day! Thanks on taking the walk with me, Jo!
