In Australia, Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September, setting it apart from other countries. Last Saturday, we enjoyed a lovely lunch and stroll in Fitzroy, near my daughter’s place.
We started with a meal at Blue Chillies, a Malaysian restaurant, and the food was absolutely delicious.
After lunch, we wandered through the streets of Fitzroy, passing by commission houses adorned with vibrant, colourful public art. Atherton Gardens estate was built by the Housing Commission of Victoria between the mid 1960s and 1971.
I was pleasantly surprised by how clean the area was. I also loved seeing flowers and vegetables growing in the community spaces. It is an impressive example of organic urban agriculture.
Fitzroy is one of Australia’s most vibrant and eclectic suburbs. The area is known for its funky charm, featuring tiled murals, stylish tram designs, and an array of street art.
We then made our way to Gertrude Street for a coffee and a cookie.
We continued on, and since it was Father’s Day, we spoiled Jack by giving him the chance to browse for some vinyl records.
Even the bins (trash cans) look cool!
Doors were in abundance too. Was surprised to see this upstairs doors without any steps attached to it. How do you think it is being used?
I also found this tiny streetart, so cute.
More colourful doors.
That concluded our stroll along Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, though we kept exploring the CBD afterward. I’ll save that adventure for another time.
What a lovely, lively area, Teresa. I’m not ‘walking’ on Monday but I’ll find some way of sharing the walks in the near future. Thanks so much!
Thanks Jo. See you when I see you. Does that mean you are travelling again?
No, hon- I just want a little break from posting the walks. I don’t really know what I want, at the moment. I’m still around.
Oh I see. Everyone needs a break. Enjoy my friend
Thanks, darlin!
Did you ever find out what use that door was? It looks in good nick.
No I didn’t. That will forever be a mystery. 🤨
Fantastic photos Teresa! I love Fitzroy too, the art work is just beautiful. I spotted that door once also and wondered the same thing haha. I wonder what it opens out to? Maybe a rooftop garden?
Haha same minds. There’s a restaurant underneath so most probably something related to that.
Love the tiny carrot guy
Glad you like it.
There’s so much to love in this post, Teresa! The street art is wonderful. I can’t believe the tiled murals – wow. I really like the tiny street art next to the door. You captured some great doors. I like the one on the upper floor, but I hope there’s a warning sign inside. The street scenes are so colorful, I think I would enjoy walking around for a long time. It looks like you had a beautiful day for a celebration. Thanks for bringing us along.
Yes Dan, there was so much to see in this place so it was fun to walk around. I am happy to take you along and see my happy place.
A friend took me to Fitzroy during my last visit to Melbourne. I remember seeing lots of murals. My impression was of a colorful and delightful neighborhood.
Glad you had fun when you went. I always enjoy walking around this place. It gives me a fun kind of vibe.
Looks like ye had a wonderful day. I love street art. It’s so creative – 99% of the time. I find it very interesting and it brightens up dull days!
Same here… it really makes a dull place become interesting. Thanks for stopping by, Gloria. And for commenting, much appreciated.
I LOVE the car! I would love to paint my little car like that
Haha better post it here if you are doing it!
The food certainly does look yummy, and there’s so much color and beauty to feast on for your stroll. Happy Father’s Day to Jack. It looks like a wonderful day. So many incredible photos, Teresa!
Sorry for the late response, it went to spam. Thanks for your wonderful comment, Brenda.
I love that the trash bins were brought to life with art, too. It’s a lot of fun.
What a great way to spend Father’s Day. I love walking around Fitzroy, though it’s a while since I’ve been there. The art is amazing. I love that painted car
The painted car was a surprise. Fitzroy is a great place to explore.
What a delightful place to explore on foot, Teresa. Great find of the tiny street art and the colorful murals. I’m glad you had a lovely Father’s Day. Thank you for your PPAC contribution.
Thanks as well Natalie. I enjoy these kinds of walk. I am sure you do too.
That cookie looks yummy — is that matcha?
Yes Julie, it is Matcha. And it is yum.
