I hadn’t caught up with my daughter since our trip to Tasmania a month ago, so we met up last Saturday for lunch. Before that, we took a stroll past the graffiti-covered walls of Hosier Lane—though there wasn’t much new to see.
For lunch, we chose a Chinese restaurant near Chinatown.
Then followed by some wandering around the city. Pat needed a costume for a themed party, so we stopped by a few stores and came across some incredible murals along the way.
One highlight of our walk was the Block Arcade, a stunning late Victorian shopping arcade built between 1891 and 1893. As part of the Golden Mile heritage walk, it’s an iconic destination in Melbourne’s CBD, known for boutique shopping, vintage jewellery, art, and historic charm.
The festive window displays of its retail shops added to the experience.
We continued exploring, passing by shops, Nutcracker soldiers, laneways, a uniquely decorated tram, stuffed toys, and Santa Land.
Since it was still early, I had time to sketch near a shaded spot at Federation Square, where the warm day called for a break. I admired the Forum Theatre, a historic landmark built in 1929, now hosting live music and events on the corner of Flinders and Russell Streets.
Later, Jack and I relaxed on a deck chair, listening to music and watching animations on Fed Square’s big screen.
As the day turned to night, we stayed to enjoy the vibrant Christmas lights, which truly came alive after sunset.

Well better start planning for a long haul flight to Melbourne. My daughter went as Trinity from the Matrix and she did find what she was looking for.
Here’s hoping for a great Christmas to you and your fam.
Thanks darlin xx
Gosh, you did see some sights – especially those murals. And that Arcade. But did your daughter get her outfit? Either way, I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas.
Haha yes my daughter did find a costume. The theme was Matrix. Hope you and your family have a joyous Christmas as well, Margaret!

Maligayang Pasko!
So festive! Enjoy the season! 😊
Have a great Christmas and New Year too!
Melbourne certainly knows how to decorate for Christmas! I still find it odd that you have all these festive displays in hot summer weather when I associate them with chilly days and long nights! Have a wonderful Christmas 🎄🎄🎄
Yes, it does feel weird that it is so hot during this time of the year, though I have been doing it for many years now. I don’t agree with you though, that Melbourne decorates well after seeing Christmas in the UK. Have a great Christmas and New Year, Sarah!
Love the Christmas lights. Melbourne looks very festive, great photos. Have a lovely Christmas Teresa.
