Tavel Diary in Miyama & Kinkaku-ji – Day 9

It was our free day on the tour, so I asked the hotel if they had any trips to the Golden Pavilion. They said the shuttle wasn’t direct and would pass by Niiyama, which meant the journey would take a bit longer. Oh well — it was a free shuttle, so we figured, why not?

It turned out to be a long drive, but as we got closer, I already knew we hadn’t made a mistake taking it.

Miyama was wrapped in fog and mist, giving the village a quiet, moody feel. The thatched-roof houses slowly appeared through the haze, making everything feel serene.

The red hues of the trees, paired with the rain, wrapped the place in a dreamy calm, with small blooms and a quiet shrine completing the picture.

Waited here for the rest of the group. Interesting shops with photo opps. And no, we didn’t see any bears.

Next stop was Kinkakuji, the Golden Pavilion, and it was stunning. The gold structure gleamed beautifully against the water. Crowded or not, it was impossible not to be impressed.

As stunning as Kinkaku-ji was, it was Miyama…with its quiet and mist, that stayed with me. I’d return in a heartbeat.

This was in 9 November 2025.

Japan in the rain. Was it cold, Teresa? It doesn’t look it, and that temple just lights the place up. Your photos are so atmospheric xx

It was moderately chilly when we went but as soon as the clouds cleared it became just fine. This is the place that I am most happy about. Thanks Jo.

This does look well worth spending time here. The rain really adds atmosphere.

I was so happy here, such a hidden gem. This is a dream for me and my husband, happily wandering just on our own.

The Golden Pavilion was one of my favourite sights in Kyoto and as you say, impressive despite the crowds. And we found it easy to lose them with a wander in the beautiful gardens as most people just seemed to come to get a quick photo or 100! But we didn’t get to Miyama and that’s a shame because it looks lovely 🙂

Thanks to our hotel which had a free shuttle to Miyama. At first we were even undecided to join because we just want to go to the Golden Pavilion but so glad we did. And the Golden Pavilion looked good even at the back area which is not so busy. Thanks for the comment Sarah.
