Drive to Te Anau

TRAVEL DIARY: DAY 10

DRIVE FROM QUEENSTOWN TO TE ANAU

This drive felt exciting—we knew that tomorrow we’d be heading to Milford Sound, the highlight of our entire trip. But today’s journey was simply about getting to a small country town where we’d be staying.

When we finally arrived in Te Anau, the town turned out to be tiny, and it seems like not much going on. I started to wonder—had I made the wrong call booking three nights here?

To pass the time, we decided to watch a movie at the local cinema. It was just an ordinary little theatre, but halfway through the film, something unexpected happened: an intermission! People got up to buy more popcorn or grab a drink. It felt charmingly old-fashioned—and surprisingly delightful. That little break made the whole experience feel quite special.

This was from my trip last April 2025.

Good morning, no worries about the lost comment… I jumped in mid-trip and had to figure out where you are – twelve hours ahead of me in New Zealand! That is what makes blogging or digital storytelling so much fun. I love the idea of an intermission, I always have to go the washroom and miss important parts of a movie! or want a refill of my drink because the popcorn is so salty. Lovely photos and enjoy your trip.

Yeah I guess intermission is good, especially to stretch tired bones and muscles haha. I just wasn’t used to it.Thanks for the comment Clay.

Another lovely drive in NZ 🙂 And I do like the idea of an intermission, especially in a longer film. It’s a chance to stretch my legs, and it reduces the distraction of other people coming and going during the film!

There is just no such thing in normal Australian cinema so I was just surprised when the lights went on and the movie froze. Have you experienced that before, Sarah?
