St Michael’s Uniting Church on Collins Street is in the middle of a busy intersection in Melbourne. It is the city’s first permanent church chapel since 1839.
Between 1863 and 1866, the old chapel was demolished to build this current structure. This is designed by architect Joseph Reed in a striking Lombardic Romanesque style with polychrome brickwork.
In front of it was this signage that says Mingary, the Quiet Place. I was intrigued by it so it got me researching. This is a non-denominational, spiritual sanctuary designed for personal reflection, meditation, and healing. It is open to people of all cultures, faiths, and backgrounds as a peaceful public escape from the busy CBD environment.
Maybe next time I can go inside and have a look at the interior.

Oh dear, poor thing. I hate to see what should be commanding older buildings dwarfed by surrounding skyscrapers. But it seems to have re-invented itself in a purposeful new way.
