Travel Diary in Katsuo-ji Temple – Day 13

I’d seen Katsuo-ji Temple on Instagram and had been really excited to visit. We left at 9am, taking the train and then a bus, and the hour journey itself already felt like part of the adventure.

This is the Katsuo-ji Temple in Mino, Osaka, and we knew we had arrived the moment we saw tiny Daruma dolls everywhere.

Daruma dolls are one of Japan’s most beloved good luck charms.

Isn’t this cute? We had to have this photo taken with them.

Katsuo-ji Temple was every bit as special as I’d imagined. Tucked away in the mountains, it felt peaceful and powerful at the same time. The temple grounds were filled with countless daruma dolls, each one symbolising perseverance, hope, and good fortune. Surrounded by forested hills and quiet paths, Katsuo-ji felt like a place to reflect.

Daruma Dolls under leaves … in cupboards … under waterfalls … around stone lanterns …

There was a lot of walking but I survived.

At the very top, we were rewarded with an amazing view of the autumn foliage and nearby temples.

All around the site are six stamp areas in total, making it fun to explore and complete the final image.

By the time we went back down, mist was slowly rolling in, hovering over the water and blending beautifully with the autumn colours and temple views.

I am linking this to Jo’s Monday Walk and also to Natalie’s Photographing Public Art Challenge

This was in 13 November 2025.

Somebody’s inner child had a lot of fun placing all those dolls, Teresa. I bet you bought some? A crazy place, in a good way. The Japanese seem to have different values to those in the west. It feels completely otherworldly. Many thanks for sharing xx

That’s why Japan feels so intriguing to me. There is the contrast in values, architecture, and so many little details of daily life. Thanks Jo.

What an amazing place! The autumn colours complement it so well too. And the sheer number of dolls seems both crazy and beautiful at the same time 😀

My pleasure to share Natalie. Thanks, glad you liked the mist. It went so fast I thought that I wouldn’t catch it.
