The quaint little town of Szentendre

“It is always sad to leave a place to which one knows one will never return. Such are the melancolies du Voyage: perhaps they are one of the most rewarding things about travelling.” – unknown

TRAVEL DIARY: SZENTENDRE

On the 17th of November, 2018 we went on a day trip to Szentendre (St Andrews), just 40 minutes away from the main city of Budapest.

The place is so pretty and we highly recommend it if you have a half a day to spare during your trip to Budapest.

It is basically a small town but there were so many things to see… shops selling Hungarian authentic crafts in particular.

Doors are in abundance … restaurants, shops, colorful houses and museums.

We noticed that there were a lot of bikes parked and aesthetically positioned in front of shops.

We saw many narrow cobblestone laneways as well.

Szentendre is known for its baroque architecture and churches

Colourful lampshades, umbrellas, murals, small flags and other public art were displayed on the streets.

Chairs and benches were available to get a bit of respite from all the shopping.

This is the main square called Fő Tér. The alleyways around it are lined with art galleries and museums that’s why some call it ‘the Artist town’.

Had lunch at Rab Raby Etterem restaurant. There was a cooking demonstration for an authentic Hungarian goulash and we also had that for our lunch. It was very delicious and hearty.

The restaurant had a quirky setting full of musical instruments, plates and other odd paraphernalia.

Wow, you hit the jackpot! I love the umbrellas that look like they are floating Mary Poppins-style. The lampshades are a hoot, too. Who thinks to do that kind of thing? LOL They must be so bright that we need shades to protect us from their brilliance! 🙂 Very cool post, Teresa. 🙂

I’ve never heard of Szentendre but it does indeed look quaint 🙂 I love the cobbled alleyways, the colourful umbrellas and lamp-shades, the beautiful church. My favourite shot I think is the one of the row of shops with large wooden doors and wooden shutters above.

I have yet to have gone anywhere in Eastern Europe. I would like to go…it just seems so colorful compared to my many trips to Western or Central Europe.

Yes, I guess searching in Instagram helps.
