Monday Walk in Melbourne CBD

As expected, I did plenty of walking while showing my cousin and cousin-in-law around during their short stay in Melbourne. I’m starting with a walk from their third day here—just in time to join this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge, which has the theme “Market.”

Walk

Our day started with an 11am mass at the St Francis’ Church located on the corner of Lonsdale and Elizabeth streets in Melbourne.

St Francis’ Church is an Australian Roman Catholic church that stands beside Melbourne’s modern cityscape—a striking blend of old and new.

Along the way, we stumbled upon what felt like a mini festival—bright, bold, and impossible to miss.

But hunger won out, so we didn’t stop to investigate. It wasn’t until later that I discovered it was all for Mecca’s new Bourke Street opening.

Our next stop was lunch—at my cousin’s request, after googling Melbourne’s must-visit spots—at the Queen Vic Market.

With our tummies happy, we ventured on to explore the market stalls.

Constructed in stages from the 1860s and officially opened in 1878, the Queen Victoria Market is the last remaining major market in the Melbourne CBD. It has a Historic, with its heritage architecture and lively market vibe.

Public Art

Here are some random public art.

We hopped on the tram and wandered down to the Yarra River, passing through Southbank along the way.

As the sun set, we passed by Flinders Street Station, aglow with its beautiful lights.

That wrapped up our walk, but the night wasn’t over yet. We watched a film at the Capitol for MIFF (Melbourne International Film Festival). It was by James Robinson, a young, talented director who happens to be Pat’s good friend. Then we finished off with a nightcap at the Pancake Parlour. What a day—12 hours of walking more than 16,000 steps.

That’s what everyone’s saying. It’s too far from everything but sometimes that’s a good thing. But not in taking long haul flights every time. Have a great time during your break.
