It is hard to think of Melbourne without Fed Square. But this iconic building hasn’t been around for long. Federation Square was just opened in 2002 and is now home to major cultural attractions, specialty stores, bars and restaurants. It is located in the middle of the Melbourne CBD opposite the Flinders Street Train Station.
It is a modern day piazza where people just sit around and spend their lazy afternoons or it is also the site where a giant Christmas tree is displayed every Christmas, it is also where the world-class galleries including The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and the Melbourne Visitor Centre are located.

But, that is not what I am focusing on for today’s post. I want you to look UP at the building and its architecture…doesn’t it look like or maybe inspired by puzzle pieces? Haha I don’t know if it is just me, but that is what I always think about when I see this building.
Fed Square is made up of a series of interlocking and cascading spaces, opening at all angles into the city and creating unexpected connections and vistas. – fedsquare.com
So there you go…that is the real meaning of the architecture … but I still think of it as an unfinished jigsaw puzzle.

Thanks, it is beautiful! Have you been here, Wilma?
A most interesting building, Teresa. Thanks for sharing about it.
My pleasure Roberta!
Fascinating!
Thanks!
Yep! It’s a puzzle to me, Teresa 🙂 🙂 I presume Melbourne is home for you. Nice city to live in?
Yes, it is a beautiful place and it has been my home for 30 years now…almost half my like.
🙂 🙂
ooh yes I agree, definitely a jigsaw puzzle! I hadn’t realised when I visited in 2004 how new this was. I must check out my photos of it from back then
Good you agreed and it’s not just me!
Awesome!
Thanks 🙏🏻
It does look unfinished doesn’t it, or as if it’s the victim of a tornado!
Haha that’s another way of looking at it.
I like this building – to me it looks a bit like origami 🙂
Wow another idea! Thanks Sarah! ❤️
What an interesting building-thanks for sharing it. It’s fun to see what’s in other cities when we’re all grounded.😃
That is true Joyce. That is what brings joy to me!
Thanks for the nice words.
What an intriguing building. Those plates look like they could hinge apart to control the amount of light inside. Do they?
I don’t think so. It is just steady.
