TRAVEL DIARY: OBIDOS
The next stop on our day trip is Obidos. This is one place not to be missed when in Lisbon … a gorgeous medieval town perched on top of a hill.
As we entered the town through Porta da Vila, the main gate, we were greeted by a stunning balcony adorned with blue and white tiles. This dates back to around the year 1380.

Turn left and up the steps to see the city walls.

Stepping past the gate, Rua Direita, the main street, bustled with activity.

Now, we walked straight into the main street leading through the entire village. We discovered the beauty of Obidos, with its well-preserved charm and picturesque cobblestone streets, perfect for a leisurely stroll.

In the quaint backstreets, we saw traditional whitewashed homes. Vibrant bougainvillea adorn doorways and windowsills, creating a striking contrast against the yellow or blue building trim.

We visited the churches of Obidos. This is the Santiago Church but is now converted into a book store.

![](https://wanderingteresa.com/wp-content/uploads/img_9030-768x1024.jpg)
This is the Church of St Peter
![](https://wanderingteresa.com/wp-content/uploads/img_0525-768x1024.jpg)
And this is the Santa Maria Church. I think there were more churches but that’s enough for the day.

And this is the Obidos Castle located at the other end of the main street. (Too bad it was too steep for me to climb).

The walls surrounding the village today were built in the 1300s. It was partly damaged in a 1755 earthquake but it was completely restored in early 20th century.
