Cotswolds – Castle Combe

TRAVEL DIARY: COTSWOLDS

After our European holiday last October 2023, Jack, Tim, and I embarked on a six-day road trip to visit my cousin in Edinburgh. With my son’s commitments sandwiching our travel dates, we had to keep it brief, but having Tim behind the wheel amidst such stunning scenery made it all worthwhile.

En route, the picturesque houses nestled amidst lush green hills and quaint villages, adorned with honey-coloured stone cottages, set the perfect mood for our journey.

This was the first stop on our road trip: the Cotswolds, a place that has forever been on my bucket list.

Castle Combe is probably the most popular village in the heart of England’s Cotswolds, where time seemed to stand still amidst winding streets, charming stone houses, and thatched roofs.

Exploring Castlecombe felt like stepping into a fairytale, with its 14th-century market cross, old water pump, and memorial to World War 1 soldiers.

The village’s architectural timelessness, unchanged since the 15th century, brought an air of serenity and nostalgia to our visit. Strolling along lanes blanketed with autumn leaves, we immersed ourselves in its historic charm, feeling transported back in time with every corner, with every street lamp.

I noticed a lady having her photo taken dressed in period costume… love it as it added an extra layer of authenticity to the ambiance of the place.

St. Andrew’s Church stood as a testament to Castle Combe’s enduring history, its 13th-century structure restored in the 19th century.

The facade stained glass windows of the church.

This is Water Lane and the bridge over the River Bybrook. So many photo opportunities here.

After a long stroll, these weathered benches provided us with a place to rest.

As the day faded, we snapped a few final pictures of the village’s enchanting beauty.

And some drive by images as we reluctantly continued on our road trip.

Strolling through the idyllic countryside and storybook villages of the Cotswolds… what a dream come true!

Love that lady in costume! Exactly the kind of thing my daughter would do 🫠🩷 Fabulous shot along the river with the Autumn colour in the background. It’s an expensive part of the world and not one I’ve often visited, Teresa, so thanks for showcasing it so beautifully 🤗🩵

The autumn leaves were definitely a bonus. Plus that lady who was just slowly walking around. So does your daughter love dressing up?

A daughter of a high school classmate does that too and the costumes and makeup are very impressive. Maybe one time you can feature her here on your blog.

I have done in the past but not too often. She prefers to keep it to friends 🤔🩷

Yes I sure will. There’s just too much traffic on the road nowadays so gotta leave earlier than usual.

Those quaint cottages don’t come at all cheap. The horny-handed sons and daughters of toil would no.longer have the remotest chance of living there. Still It is a lovely place, in lovely countryside.

      1. Teresa says:

It is a lovely place to visit even once in this lifetime. Such a beautiful experience. But you can really see the rich and famous lifestyle from inside the gates.

    2. Teresa says:

Surreal feeling! Glad you liked it.
