Amsterdam in Monochrome

There’s no set theme for this week’s Monochrome Madness Challenge, so I’ve decided to feature monochrome shots from my travels.

Amsterdam is a city that often dazzles in colour—golden light on the canals, flower-filled windows, bikes in every hue, and gabled houses leaning into one another like old friends. But what happens when all that colour is stripped away? How does Amsterdam feel in black and white?

Seeing the city in monochrome, the ripples on the canals become textured brushstrokes and the narrow houses, so famously crooked, stand out more starkly against the sky.

Without colour, the focus shifts to form, shadow, and light—and suddenly, the charm of Amsterdam takes on a quieter, more contemplative tone.

I think it works really well Teresa, you can see the shapes and textures so much more. You don’t get distracted by the colours.

      Thanks Leanne.

Interesting take, particularly on the canals and the houses, which normally draw you with their colors.
I think it works in bringing that ‘old world’ feel.

Thanks Nes. Sometimes it does work well in black and white.
