A return to Montsalvat with Sis

TRAVEL DIARY: MONTSALVAT WITH SIS

Its funny to experience the same thing with different people. You see how they react, and how they meet or subvert your expectations.

I had a fantastic time at Montsalvat earlier this year with friends, so when my sister came to visit in April, I was excited to introduce her to this incredible artist community less than an hour from my home. You might recognize it from my previous blog, but rest assured, this isn’t a repost—I’m simply sharing this walk with my sister.

So this is the Resident’s gallery which is the first building on the right upon entering.

Some modern exhibit in contrast to the olden style building.

Went out on the other door to see some sculpture scattered around the place.

Next, we visited the home of the Peacocks.

And this is the warning at the cottage which is also the rare white Peacock’s habitat.

My name is “Snow White” I am a Peacock. I am 8 years old. I am very vulnerable so, for my safety, I have to live here! Please be quiet because I get frightened easily. Regards

On the next cottage, we were happy to see an artist in action, showing us her large painting of a dog on a back seat of a car.

Loved these antique door knockers and door knobs to one of the workshops where they were doing leather chairs seats.

Next is a large wooden gate entrance to the Main Hall. Situated across 12 acres, the buildings are scattered throughout the gardens creating the ideal conditions for creative expression.

Montsalvat is a creative hub, with extensive gardens and rich cultural history. It still has some doors and paintings from way back.

Some sections have large number of artist studios with their art pieces.

Walking further downhill is The Bluestone chapel which was mostly built from recycled building materials in the 1930’s and 1940’s.

This portion of the colony creates a feeling of magic and nostalgia. It has the typical provincial medieval architecture of the French Villages and the great Gothic cathedrals of France and Spain.

And as we were leaving we found these sculptures

Well, what can I say, location is the number one on my list of places to take friends and family for a special walk… especially if they are interested in art.
