Rediscovering Melbourne…

Melbourne, where I grew up, is one of the street art capitals of the world. Something about discovering freshly painted walls always fills me with optimism; its autonomous and democratic, and reminds me that maybe people are paying attention after all.”— Penelope Mitchell

It was announced yesterday that Melbourne is opening up on Thursday. The long awaited freedom is coming soon and it is time to do some shopping, dining, exploring … and of course coffee and cake.

Melbourne is well known for its coffee culture and now even extending to great art in cafes.

Pati’s topic for this week’s challenge is “Street Art” and what better way to show it than walking the streets of Melbourne. Here is someone who knows exactly what I am talking about…a street artist in Hosier Lane in the heart of Melbourne CBD.

Posting this in connection to Monday Portrait but not quite sure who is hosting the challenge.

Staying at home is safe but getting to be boring now and it’s time to rediscover our city once again. Both Street Art can be found in the AC/DC Lane.

A large mural high up the famous Hosier Lane and art on the wall in South Melbourne market.

The mural tells the story of “The Legend of Fire ” and is dedicated to firemen. The mural, commissioned by the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade, was started in 1980 and completed in 1982.Designer & director Harold Freedman, master tiler Tony Barese, Joe Attard and David Jac

Some more additional street art around Melbourne. Hope you enjoy seeing my city as much as I enjoyed taking photos of it.

    Beautiful ones!
I really do regret we rushed through in 1995, but maybe back then this was not popular yet?

    1. Teresa says:

I am not really sure. Back then I was focused on my growing kids so I didn’t have time for Streetarts.

I like the colors in the variety of art you showed us and cheers to the beach houses at Brighton Beach

    1. Teresa says:

Glad you liked them, my friend 👍🏼

Fantastic murals – love cities that celebrate street art. Porto and Lisboa both do this, in fact the whole of Portugal seems to have embraced street art

    1. Teresa says:

That is the reason that I really, really want to go.

      1. BeckyB says:

Fingers crossed it won;t be too long before you can visit

        1. Teresa says:

          I know 🤞

Delicious coffee and above all, wonderful street art. I like this kind of art very much. I also wrote some blog about it. You can find them by using my ‘search’ function, looking for ‘street art’.
    Have a lovely day,
    Rudi

    1. Teresa says:

Thanks Rudi… will look at it now.

Great news for Melbournians for sure Teresa. Love all the wonderful murals you posted, but the Legend of Fire is stunning, so much work went into it. Thanks for participating in Monday Murals Teresa.

    1. Teresa says:

My pleasure Sami. I also think that is a magnificent and very meaningful mural.

  6. What great art, and so varied and colourful!

    1. Teresa says:

      Thanks a lot ❤️

colorful murals! happy for you, Techie that Melbourne is opening up!

    1. Teresa says:

Thanks Wi. Yes I am excited! My daughter is coming over for dinner on Saturday…it has been a few long months.

  8. Toonsarah says:

Looks like your city has a wonderful selection of street art! And I’m glad to hear you’re finally opening up again 🙂 Enjoy getting out and about once more!

    1. Teresa says:

Yes, Melbourne has an abundance of murals, you just have to know where to find some of them. And I know…I am excited to see friends and family again but still a bit anxious because there are still a lot of cases here.

      1. Toonsarah says:

It’s the same here, but the vaccinations seem to be preventing high numbers of serious infections thankfully

        1. Teresa says:

I hope that vaccinations will also help us here as well like what is happening there.

  9. Dora says:

Beautiful street art! I’m so happy that Melbourne will be coming out from under lockdown. What a joy to be able to see the happy faces in the cafes again!
    pax,
    dora

    1. Teresa says:

Thanks so much Dora. I am ok with being safe in the comfort of my little world but what concerned me was not seeing my daughter because she lives outside the allowable kilometres. So now At last I will be able to see her.
Thanks for liking the murals too, Dora.

      1. Dora says:

        💞💞🙂

  10. Just like my city, Melbourne seems to have embraced murals as an art form. They are all fabulous. Of course Legend of Fire is one of my favorites, but also so is the Tree Squares aboriginal art. Wonderful art you found and it’s nice to read you will soon be out of lockdown.

    1. Teresa says:

Thanks so much B&E for your nice words. So many cities have embraced street art now which I am happy about.

  11. Ludwig says:

Never seen a wafting curtain on a closed window before, but, hey, art is art and a window on a Monday always counts. Thank you!

    1. Teresa says:

Haha yes that is art for you. Have a great week!

  12. maristravels says:

Great colours in the street art and great selection from your camera. Happy for you all that life will soon be returning to something approaching normality but please don’t call it ‘freedom’. It’s that word that encouraged so many of my fellow-countrymen and women to throw caution to the winds and now we are in a bad phase again!

    1. Teresa says:

That is what I am afraid of. There’s still a lot of cases here but from an economical point of view we really have to open up. I just hope that a high vax rate will do the job somehow. Hope you are ok…be well Maris and be safe.
Thanks for liking the colours of my murals as well. ❤️

  13. Jyothi says:

    1. Teresa says:

      Thanks, my pleasure to share.

  15. pattimoed says:

A wonderful collection, Teresa, from Melbourne, one of my favorite cities, plus a few others I don’t know. I was hoping I’d recognize some of the street art you’d chosen in Melbourne, but they’re all new. I really enjoyed them. I love the vibrant designs and colors.

    1. Teresa says:

Glad you liked it. I have a lot in my collection that I didn’t know what to choose for this week’s challenge. Thanks Patti ❤️

  16. restlessjo says:

I really love to turn a corner and find a striking piece of street art! Freedom beckons, Teresa.

    1. Teresa says:

Yes, that is Melbourne and its alleyways. Thanks … soon my friend!

  17. Tina Schell says:

Wow Teresa, quite an array of amazing art! I guess Melbourne really is a capital of street art. Loved the image of the painter at work. Laughed at his high tech approach to reaching higher areas of his art LOL.

    1. Teresa says:

This laneway is called Hosier Lane and in here we can find all sorts of artworks because it is a free area to express their form of art…and in a few weeks or even just days someone paints over it with their work. Unlike some of the murals which stay there forever.

  18. Alison says:

Wonderful Teresa, enjoy your freedom and start exploring again x

    1. Teresa says:

Quite not there yet…put it in approximately 1 day and a few more hours 😂😂😂

      1. Alison says:

Do you have a plan or just take things step by step

        1. Teresa says:

I think one step at a time. Coming from the most locked down state…I think I need to be cautious unless we get into too much trouble cancelling flights or rebooking accommodations. We will see. How about you, Ali?

          1. Alison says:

Locked in forever it seems! While the rest of the world and Australia open up, we will be looking on in envy. Hopefully by next April I can get to the UK to see my parents and brother

          2. Teresa says:

I hope so too Ali! All the best for all of us!

          3. Alison says:

            Definitely 🥂

  19. Leya says:

An amazing collection, Teresa! So colourful and so talented artists. I love especially the one dedicated to firemen. I’d love to visit Melbourne!

    1. Teresa says:

I hope you can one day, A-C. You will love it!

      1. Leya says:

        I am sure!
