Doors of the La Sagrada Familia

Welcome back, everyone! We’re diving into Dan’s Thursday Doors challenge for 2024. Here’s my initial entry for the year.

In 2015, they put the first doors on La Sagrada Familia’s Nativity façade Charity portal. Made by Etsuro Sotoo, the bronze doors with ivy leaves represent lasting love for Mary and Joseph.

The doors on the Passion Facade show Jesus’ death with bold, blocked letters. A modern stylized Jesus on the front bears whip scars, vividly expressing the suffering of the crucifixion.

In September 2008, they added the Glory façade doors by Subirachs. They have the Lord’s Prayer and “Give us our daily bread” in 50 languages. The handles carry Gaudí’s initials, “A” and “G”.

This is the Iris door—a masterpiece adorned with pretty iris and lily flowers, bamboo, butterflies, terrapins, and all sorts of water creatures and bugs.

The Gethsemane Door is the first of three bronze doors on Sagrada Família’s Passion Facade. Made by Subirachs from 1992 to 1994, it shows Jesus’ night prayer with reliefs of sleeping disciples and verses from the Gospel telling the story.

I am so grateful to have served you for 2023 with my humble sketch of a blue door.

Now let us welcome this year’s New Badge by in primo piano- photos

What gorgeous doors Teresa 😀! I was at the Sagrada Familia in 2017 but I can’t recall everything that I saw. I need to look at my archive of phone pictures but I remember very well that I’d not taken my camera with me and was very disappointed about it!

    1. Teresa says:

Oh nooo that is a disaster. I can never leave the house without my camera haha Anyway, just have a look at my two posts about Sagrada so you can relive your 2017 trip. Have a good day PR

Happy New Year, Teresa. We visited this cathedral a bit before covid and I wonder if they’ve completed the exterior facade as of your visit? It truly is an amazing bit of architecture, so many beautiful doors, archways, sculptures…something to see!

      1. Teresa says:

There’s still a lot of construction going on everywhere, so who knows when it can be completely done. It really is a must see. Thanks for the comment.
