I am intrigued by the quirky architecture of this Dancing House in Prague… also known as the Fred & Ginger House. I am also fascinated by its many windows that I decided to have a go in making a pen and ink artwork of it. I don’t know if I did it justice but here goes…
The Ginger building is represented by the glass tower, which stands on a series of curved columns that give a graceful air to the figure of the building which, as we can see, contracts in the central area to project back outwards at the top.
This tower is covered by two layers of curtain wall, both of which are made of glass, with the exterior being attached to the building by means of a steel structure.
Fred Building (the yang)
For its part, the building that would represent Fred Astaire is supported by three pillars and its façade, full of undulating lines, has 99 prefabricated concrete panels.
The curved lines of the mouldings on this façade are striking, contributing, together with the curved shape of the building and the protruding window frames, to distorting the perspective and making it even more curved.
Finally, the building is crowned by a striking sculpture of metal tubes covered by a stainless steel mesh. – *stacbond.es
I think your drawing is fantastic. I’m in awe of anyone who can produce a work that resembles what they see in front of them. I am blind when it comes to reproducing anything with pen, pencil or paint.
Thanks for your kind words. I have just started doing art again just recently…I used to do it when I was in school and then I stopped so basically I am a newbie all over again.
Love this post, Teresa! It took me a while to unpack, unwrap, like a present. I love the name, and legendary dancers the building alludes to. It took me a while to realise that the photograph wasn’t a painting. It is whimsical, fantastical, and your sketch totally captured this; very Dr Seuss, just like your opening quote from one of my favourite Seuss books (my college room-mate gifted it to me when we graduated).
Well done! Thank you!
My pleasure!
Great photo and drawing. I bet the views are fantastic from inside.
I didn’t go in but I am thinking it would be gorgeous as well since it overlooks the Vltava River.
That would be beautiful!
